EDHID SHORTCUT: Lola Luc (GER)
We like talented Lola Luc’s heavily reggae-influenced dub style and thought to catch here very early for our SHORTCUT series. Enjoy!
Where do you feel home?
Nature.
When was your first contact with music?
I guess Turkish cassettes that my parents played at home when I was little (Zeki Müren, Sezen Aksu etc.).
Which was your first record bought and what memories do you associate with it?
That must have been Peter Tosh ‘Buk-In-Hamm Palace’ (7inch).
I had bought it when I was 15 years old for a Rasta dude I had a crush on, but never ended up giving it to him because I was too shy.
Do you collect vinyl? If yes, which is your favourite record store?
Yes, I do. I haven’t had the chance to visit many record stores all over the world, so my choice will be limited to Berlin’s Hardwax.
Although their selection is very eclectic, I find myself buying a lot of records every time I go there. Also Oye record store is pretty good.
What brought you to do DJing?
A coincidence. I was hanging out at a bar back in my hometown a lot. They had turntables and records there. On a whim, I asked them if i could try and play some records too and it was great fun. Though I was still in school back then. It wasn’t until I moved to Berlin and graduated from university that this idea eventually took shape.
When and what was your first mix?
After visiting NY, I recorded my ‘Turkish Delight Summer Mix’.
How would you describe your style?
I’d say I try to find something special from every genre, new and old, and make it work together.
Which medium do you use to play?
Vinyl and CD/USB.
What are your favourite spots to play?
My favourite place to play is always the next spot.
Which record is your secret weapon?
I wouldn’t call it ‘secret weapon’ but one of the things that comes to my mind is Retro/Grade ‘Moda’.
That one always seems to work as a peak time track.
What is the best and what is worst thing about DJing?
Being able to play the music you love.
Worst thing is standing for long hours. Compression socks help.
What is your personal hangover killer?
I mostly try to avoid alcohol. But I heard orange juice with a spoon of salt does wonders.
Which art comes second for you after music?
Literature.
What comes in your mind when thinking of Istanbul?
A metropolis and a city that has it’s own rhythm. Lot’s of beautiful small streets, market criers, lot’s of delicious food, fishermen and seagulls.
What can we expect next?
More music!
